We might all say 9/11 these days (although I try not to), but the dreadful events that day still didn't happen in the morning in the UK. I pointed this out to an author, but it was not deemed important. Maybe it wasn't.
And when Jacqueline W ended up with a palate instead of a palette I thought it was her fault. Perhaps someone 'corrected' it back.
Datives that bite don't sound too ethical to me...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2363444567124084776.post-21186710402919595002011-10-15T18:36:32.887+01:002011-10-15T18:36:32.887+01:00I'd assumed, never having used one, that a cop...I'd assumed, never having used one, that a copy editor would highlight her changes in the document to make it easy for the writer to consider each one. I really wouldn't like anyone to alter my text in such a way that I had to try to spot the differences. All too easy to miss some minor but mistaken change.Lexihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14404818053292364819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2363444567124084776.post-21961030506156553342011-10-15T10:27:51.459+01:002011-10-15T10:27:51.459+01:00I too have had varying copy editors. Somewhere in the middle are those who tweak a little and you're not sure why they have or whether your version or theirs is better.
In this case, if working electronically, I save the document as something else, then accept all changes and read it anew. If nothing jars and nohting is lost I then tend to accept the change for real.Gill Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00632631163777155215noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2363444567124084776.post-80099413859236788072011-10-15T09:15:32.380+01:002011-10-15T09:15:32.380+01:00And thank you, Adele! And thank you, Adele!Stroppy Authorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16560035800075465845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2363444567124084776.post-17636732557625427302011-10-15T09:12:58.133+01:002011-10-15T09:12:58.133+01:00Jo - I'm so glad you have a good copy editor; ...Jo - I'm so glad you have a good copy editor; it makes the job so much easier, and seeing your improved or corrected text is a delight. Good for you - and her/him!

Jenny - there are a few travel guides for children, but not many. There are not so many for adults being published now, either. The market for travel guides has largely moved online and is moving into e-book/app formats as people don't want to carry a book when they can have the guide on their phone. When I proposed some children's travel guides (some years ago) I was told there wasn't a market for them. I'm sure it's not true - or wasn't before the rise of digital travel guides at least. But they guessed there was not *enough* of a market, and there's not a lot we can do about that as they hold the purse strings.

Thank you for the alert about the profile. I'll see if I can find out what has happened to that.Stroppy Authorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16560035800075465845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2363444567124084776.post-49690960806668804722011-10-15T08:59:41.707+01:002011-10-15T08:59:41.707+01:00Yep I know who you are too, nice to have such a di...Yep I know who you are too, nice to have such a distinctive style, isn't it! I can't see your profile actually.
Anyway I wondered why there aren't any travel books for kids. Do you know? Neither Stanfords nor Daunts have any.Jenny Woolfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16881781466502273314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2363444567124084776.post-26731891786767261422011-10-15T08:55:52.325+01:002011-10-15T08:55:52.325+01:00I can't speak highly enough of my copy editor....I can't speak highly enough of my copy editor. She tweaked a few sentences, and spotted obvious spelling mistakes - but there weren't too many of those. What I had been careless about was the spelling of place names - I've written a memoir of my middle-aged wanderlust - I must have scrawled the names in my journal but didn't bother to check them when it came to the text. My copy editor must have trawled through Atlases and maps - down the obscure little rivers in New Zealand and the tiniest village in the Malaysian jungle. The only mistakes left are definitely mine!JOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03127111575563904349noreply@blogger.com
